Photojournalism:

(1) "visual images offered as news are presented as authentic and
objective pieces of evidence-not as representations of reality,
but in a sense, as reality itself."

(2) "images come with words...They come with historical baggage,
both in terms of the particular event and in terms of previous
events."

How does the President use this visuals towards the support of the “War on Terror”?

In President Bush congressional and national address on September 20th, Bush featured the heroism of ordinary American’s:

“We have seen it in the courage of passengers, who rushed terrorists to save others on the ground—passengers like an exceptional man named Todd Beamer. And would you please help me to welcome his wife, Lisa Beamer, here tonight.”Lisa Beamer

With Lisa Beamer visible presence as well as other hero’s and leaders during 9/11, President Bus amplified the good images from the terrorist attacks. President Bush ended his speech with another effective visual. Displaying the police shield of George Howard, a officer who died attempting to save the lives of those who were trapped in the World Trade Center, Bush pushed for the world to view his shield as a “reminder of lives that ended, and the task that does not end.” badgeAlthough both images did not logically connect-victims of terrorist attacks towards a never ending war- Bush connection seemed positive and/or justified after the traumatic experience. Another unique treat his visual represented were they essentially replaced the frightening images of the twin towers crashing down or of men falling out of builds which were being replayed over and over in our media, with images of common heroes; firefighters stopping the flame, mass crows donating blood, pedestrians helping dig out survivors and the of course the still standing American flag. Shifting the mood towards getting justice for Lisa Beamer, a now pregnant grieving widow, or George Howard, a fallen hero, President Bush grounded his visuals as tool towards his justification for the “war on terror” which he later uttered for the first time in the speech. Essentially to stand against the President would mean to stand against Lisa and George and all those who had fallen or had loved ones that did not make it home.
